Demystifying Anxiety: What If Anxiety Is Not the Enemy? A new way to understand anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common words I hear — in conversations, in sessions, and in the way we describe our inner world.

“I feel anxious.”
“I am anxious.”
“I have anxiety.”

And often, behind these words, there is something else: confusion… frustration… sometimes even fear of the feeling itself.

We’ve come to relate to anxiety as something to get rid of.
Something to fix.
Something that shouldn’t be there.

But what if anxiety is not the enemy?

What if, instead of pushing it away, we began to understand it?

Over time, through both my work and my own reflections, I’ve come to see anxiety not as a problem to eliminate, but as something that carries meaning.

A signal.
A response.
Sometimes even a guide.

And yet, because we don’t always understand it, we can end up fighting it — which often makes it feel even stronger. This is where I’d like to gently offer a different perspective.

In this series, Demystifying Anxiety, I’ll explore anxiety from a few different angles — not to give one single answer, but to open up a way of relating to it that feels more human, more compassionate, and perhaps a little less overwhelming.

🌱 Part 1: Language, the Brain & Why It Matters

We’ll begin with something simple, yet powerful - the way we speak about anxiety.
How a small shift in language can change the way we experience it, and how understanding the body’s response can help us move away from self-blame.

🌱 Part 2: When the Mind and the Heart Don’t Align

We’ll explore anxiety as a form of inner conflict - the tension between different parts of us, and what happens when who we are and how we are living don’t quite align.

🌱 Part 3: Trauma, Attachment & How Anxiety Develops

We’ll look at how anxiety can develop over time - shaped by early relationships, experiences, and the ways we learned to adapt in order to feel safe and connected.

🌱 Part 4: From Fighting Anxiety to Understanding It

And finally, we’ll explore a different approach - moving from trying to eliminate anxiety to learning how to listen to it, understand it, and work with it.

This is not about pathologising anxiety.
And it’s not about offering quick fixes.

It’s about slowing down enough to ask a different question:

What might anxiety be trying to tell me?
